Coquard Loison Fleurot Morey-Saint-Denis 2020 – Magnum

Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot is located in Flagey-Échezeaux, and after making the shift to domaine bottling in 2009/2010 — following many years of selling grapes to négociants — the estate rapidly built a very strong reputation through constant care for quality across holdings in 12 appellations, of which no fewer than 6 are Grands Crus.

As the name suggests, several families are involved, working at different levels from vineyard to sales. Thomas Colladot, born in 1984 and son of a Coquard, makes the wines and has seen his stock rise substantially in recent years, while the commercial side of the business is led by Claire Fleurot. There is no bought-in fruit at CLF — all juice comes from the domaine’s own vines, most planted in the 1950s, farmed using organic principles.

Terroir & Vinification

The village cuvée is sourced from two lieux-dits: Les Crais Grillion and En Seuvrey, both on the Gevrey-Chambertin border, with vines aged 50 years and older. The blend incorporates approximately 15% whole bunches, with fermentation on ambient yeasts, gentle extraction, and careful barrel ageing to preserve the darker, more structured character that Morey-Saint-Denis typically expresses relative to its neighbours.

Tasting Notes

Eye: Deep, dense purple-ruby, darker and more brooding than a typical Vosne or Chambolle.

Nose: Intense aromas of blackcurrant, cassis and ripe dark cherry, with earthy undertones and a hint of forest floor — the signature Morey signature of power held in reserve.

Palate: Medium-bodied, fresh and fleshy, with dark cherry fruit framed by fine, well-integrated tannins. The finish is remarkably silky for a wine of this density, with a saline, mineral edge and good driving acidity lending precision and length.

Food Pairing

An ideal partner for roasted game birds, duck confit, braised lamb shoulder, or a well-aged Époisses. At the Asian table, pairs beautifully with Peking duck, soy-braised pork belly, or mushroom-forward dishes such as truffle fried rice.
